Amazing places to see

Places to see in Chile

Given the amazing places to see in Chile—its 2,700 mile coastline, desert north, icy south, and lush countryside—planning can be daunting. Here are just a few of the many places an Alluring Americas trip can take you.

Chile adventure travel

The Extremes: Atacama Desert, Southern Patagonia, and Easter Island

If you’re looking for Chile adventure travel, you’ll find it in the Atacama Desert. Although it’s the driest place on earth, its oases are pleasant all year. From valleys to skies, it always delights. Far to the south, wild Patagonia awaits.

The Southern Patagonian Ice Field feeds numerous glaciers. And nearby, Torres del Paine’s granite spires tower imposingly. Easter Island is 2,300 miles off the coast, making it the world’s most isolated inhabited island. Also known as Rapa Nui, Easter Island is famous for its mysterious human-shaped monoliths known as moai.

The capital of Chile

The Capital City: Santiago

Santiago, the capital of Chile, is a cultural hub where old-world charm meets avant-garde excitement. It’s surrounded by world-class vineyards and diverse activities. About a ninety-minute drive from Santiago, the port city of Valparaíso overlooks the Pacific Ocean. A little north of Valparaíso is Viña del Mar, the “Garden City.”

Established in 1536, Valparaíso (a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2002) is one of the oldest ports in Chile.

Must-see places

Places to visit in Chile

There is no shortage of places to visit in Chile—from the arid desert, over to Easter Island, and south to Patagonia. Luckily, Alluring Americas knows how to get you where you want to be. Here’s our list of must-see places.

When you’re in Santiago

Santiago, the capital, offers museums, theaters, restaurants, and local culture. It’s a great jumping point for visiting nearby areas—such as the wine country. Central Chile’s natural landscapes and perfect climates produce some of the world’s best wines: chardonnay, pinot noir, and exceptional cabernet, to name just a few varieties!

Moreover, tours let you explore the entire wine-making process. And best of all—samples! You can just about taste the cool, coastal climate in the mildly sweet crispness of a Chilean sauvignon blanc.

Later on, explore the cobbled streets of nearby Valparaíso, which wind through the hills surrounding the bay. And just up the road, Viña del Mar is simply beautiful. Affectionately dubbed the “Garden City,” it boasts beautiful tropical gardens, welcoming parks, and eight miles of dazzling beach.

A tasty traditional Chilean dish is barbecued beef or pork served with tomatoes, potatoes, or corn, and there are many local specialty soups, stews, and pies to try.

When you’re in the Atacama Desert

The oasis town of San Pedro de Atacama serves as a central point for visiting many of the surrounding landscapes: geysers, valleys, and salt lakes. All-terrain sports enthusiasts love the sandy dunes, and the clear skies and high altitude make this a perfect place for astronomers. However, be sure to wear sunscreen and dress for cold weather; the desert sun is harsh, and the temperature drops at night.

When you’re on Easter Island

The many Easter Island archeological sites tell the history of one of the earliest human societies; it’s been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1995. Hanga Roa, the only populated town, boasts seventy standing moai, and there are many more in a nearby volcanic crater.

When you’re in Southern Patagonia

Southern Patagonia is an outdoor-loving person’s paradise. Trek through forests and over mountains in the fantastic Torres del Paine National Park, which also offers an incredible view of the Southern Ice Fields. In addition to amazing glaciers and beautiful mirror lakes, the park (a UNESCO biosphere reserve since 1978) sports diverse flora and fauna and numerous geological features.

Things to do in Chile

Whether you’re planning a family trip to Chile or looking for outdoorsy Patagonia travel, there are almost endless things to do in Chile. Skiing, sand surfing, viewing marine life, stargazing, mountain climbing—all await you here.

City life

Santiago

The city of Santiago is divided into districts. The historic center of Santiago offers good travel connections throughout the city. Visit La Moneda Cultural Center for interesting and fun art and culture exhibits; it’s underneath the Presidential Palace.

Jazz fan? Visit Santiago in January, and check out the Festival de Jazz de Providencia.

East Santiago has amazing arts scenes and museums—even for children. Kids can experience Museo Interactivo Mirador’s interactive science and art exhibits! Take the cable car up to Cerro San Cristòbal for an impressive view of the city. Then have a family picnic in the Parque Metropolitano de Santiago before visiting the zoo and botanical garden.

And there’s plenty to experience just outside Santiago. Here’s a fun fact: if you wake up in Santiago, you can ski in the Andes in the morning and relax on the beach later the same day.

Full of opportunities

Atacama Desert

San Pedro de Atacama is a wonderful oasis town and a great setting-off point for desert excursions. Maybe your adventurous half wants to go sandboarding, horseback riding, or hiking. Or perhaps your inner archeologist is eager to explore the village of Aldea de Tulor. Possibly you’re simply hoping to lie back and gaze at the stars during a dark desert night.

You can do it all! Watch the sky change colors—blues, oranges, pinks, and purples—as the sun rises behind the El Tatio geysers. Then spend a day at Laguna Cejar, where the water is as salty as the Dead Sea. No matter what you’re yearning to experience, Alluring Americas can create a tour for you.

Enigmatic and captivating

Easter Island

Ancient landscapes, intriguing sacred temples, colossal volcanoes, and moai statues make Easter Island an enigmatic and captivating archaeological gem.

The archeological studies of the moai statues and the island inhabitants have answered many questions, but how the massive stones were moved remains a mystery. Maybe you’ll discover the answer on your adventures!

You won’t be disappointed!

Southern Patagonia

In Southern Patagonia, visit Puerto Natales for all your outdoor gear, travel needs, and souvenirs. As you travel through mountain ranges, glacial valleys, and forests, keep an eye out for gray foxes, pumas, crested caras, and Andean condors. In addition, other attractions include Cuernos del Paine, Grey Glacier, and Lago Grey.

In all of these marvelous places, you can spy penguins, whales, dolphins, and sea otters. Don’t forget to check with Alluring Americas about excursions for horseback riding, white-water rafting, volcano climbing, and world-class fly-fishing. And when you’re done, take a soothing soak in the area’s thermal springs.

Where to stay in Chile

Every traveler needs a place to rest their head, which means Chile luxury travel doesn’t end with transportation. Here’s some information about where to stay in Chile.

In general, the bigger the town, the more accommodation options you have.

Where to stay in Santiago

Santiago accommodations, including five-star hotels, are easy to find, but things get more expensive as you go east. Downtown features midrange hotels. And nearby residential areas feature charming B and Bs and even rooms in private houses. Just east are small boutique hotels. Travel farther east, and you’ll find luxury chains and ski resorts.

Where to stay in the Atacama Desert

The usual lodging options are available in the oasis towns, but this is also a great place to try something different: camping! Alluring Americas can help you to arrange silk pillowcases or canvas tents or anything in between.
